What is a Bouncer?

A Bouncer (BNC) is a software that works between you and the IRC server, as though it was another server. It has a wide range of functions, including:

  • hiding the IP of your connection.
  • a permanent connection to the server while keeping your nickname (nick protection).
  • saving messages which you may receive while you're offline.
  • saving your channels, so you don't have to rejoin them every time you come online.

On the network different kinds of bouncers can be found: shroudBNC, PsyBNC and ZNC (the most used). Each one has its own particularities.
