This glossary will provide a basic overview about terms related to IRC and it's related issues.

A

  • Alias -
    • An alias is more or less a shortcut for a longer command. E.g. in mIRC, aliases define that you can use /p instead of a whole /part # - and other commands are shortened by aliases as well. This section is accessable via Alt + R and can be altered the way you want. Further information is available under remote.

  • Authacc -
    • The authacc (or to be more precise AuthServ account), is the account a user may register on our network to have channels registered or access in channels; hide his/her IP or create a contact option. For further details, visit the AuthServ article.
  • AuthServ - see AuthServ; AuthServ is the authentification service on OnlineGamesNet.

B

  • Ban -
    • A ban is an option, channel operators (or people with enough access in a registered channel) may use, to prevent other users from rejoining the chan and from talking. There are different kinds of bans available and different options on how to ban a specific user. Details on the ChanServ options in regard of bans, may be found here.

  • BNC - see Bouncer

  • Bouncer -
    • A software, used as some kind of 'answering machine' on the IRC. See Bouncer to see some more information, or visit wikipedia for it.

C

  • Channel -
    • Channels, being registered or not, are 'chatrooms' opened on the network by the joining of 1 user. In unregistered chans, the first person joining will get the operator mode inside the chan. Registered chans on this network provide an accecss management system, that prevents takeovers by other users and allow some commands and options for administration.

  • ChanServ - see ChanServ, this is the 'Channel Service' used to register and manage chans on the OGN.

  • Client -
    • Clients (or better 'IRC Clients') are the programs used to connect to the InternetRelayChat (IRC). Some instructions for installation and handling of a number of different clients may be found at the respective category - here.

  • Command -
    • In order to connect to OnlineGamesNet's IRC network it is necessary to use some sort of software, which can be a desktop IRC client, a web application or a web browser plug-in. In either case, you can use instructions to communicate with that software to carry out some actions. These instructions are called commands and they're written in the same area where you type your messages when speaking with other people.
  • CTCP -
    • CTCP (Client-To-Client Protocol) is a inter-client communication for the IRC. It's used to find out specific informations about other users - like version, local time.. of the other client. Further informations can be found at wikipedia. Please note, that most clients may as well block ctcp reactions or allow a variation of the answer. Therefore, the available informations may not be reliable.

D

  • Disconnect -
    • A disconnect is the wanted or accidental end of your connection to the IRC. Besides closing down your client, it can surely happen that you are disconnected because of several other reasons. Common examples would be: Your internet connection going down, a firewall preventing your connection, the IRC server being shut down (or gone offline) or even a forced disconnect due to a Gline or excess flood (see below).

  • Domain (IRC)

  • Events -
    • As the word expresses, events at IRC are 'things happening'. Right here, we are talking about everything from someone getting opped/voiced, to a kick or ban, change of topic or even channel settings in registered chans. Those chans do provide an option to check such events using !events (or /cs #channelname events) while having at least 350 access at this channel. Doing so, you can take a look at the last actions and commands being performed in the chan for a limited amount of time.

  • Excess Flood -
    • Already mentioned above at 'disconnect', the 'excess flood' is a forced disconnect from the server. It happens when you (or your IRC client to be more precise), sends a huge amount of data in a short amount of time. This normally happens, when someone tries to send many lines of text at one time - so better use a Pastebin service for long texts or send the text in smaller parts.
    • The counterpart to 'excess flood' is "max sendq exceeded" (so having requested way too many data).

F

  • Fakehost -
    • The term 'Fakehost' describes the method used on the OGN, to hide the IP of a logged in user - and provide him with some kind of ID. The Fakehost is shown instead of the real host (which is why it's called fake ;) ). Some more informations can be found here.

  • Flood -
    • Flood, or more commonly known as flooding, describes the repeated and multiple posting of several messages in the same chan and in a short amount of time (message flood) - as well as the technical process of forced disconnects due to either too much send OR received data, which is processed by the server itself.   • GameServ - Another network service, used to assist with informations about some of the Games. E.g. the names of the GameOperators, links to the pillory and some team internal things as well. See GameServ as well.

  • G-line -
    • A G-line or global kill line (also written G:line) is a global network ban applied to a user. Some topics in connection to G-line on the OGN are available at the G-line article.

H

  • Hostmask -
    • Hostmask (or often used as the shorter 'Host' only) refers to an IRC address assigned to a client by the server. A more detailed description is available at the respective article.

  • Ident

  • Ircd

  • Join

  • Kick

  • Kill -
    • A kill is an enforced disconnect of a user, issued by one of the network opers. This is 'usually' used on to warn someone after repeated abuse or breakage of the network rules; e.g. bypassing bans, flooding a chan or posting 'badlinks'. Kills are as well used by SpamServ to react on spam and flood.

L

  • Lag -
    • A commonly used term, used to describe a high latency in the data exchange between user and server. This may as well affect IRC as most other software (like games, data/video streams,..) connected to the internet. A more detailed description can be found at wikipedia.

  • LOC (Login on Connect) - for further details, see LOC

M

  • Mask

  • mIRC - a common IRC client (see Clients).

N

  • Netsplit -
    • Situation, were one (or more) servers of the network loose the connection and synchronization with the other servers of the network. This causes the users of this (or these) server(s) to be splitted from the rest of the users. More about these process can be read at this wiki article.

  • Nick (or Nickname) -
    • In general: The username someone chooses for himself.
    • At the IRC (and especially the OGN), everyone may use any available nick, as the nick is not used to identify someone. Instead, an authentification via a network service (AuthServ) is used for this purpose.
    • Nicks - as well as Idents and Hosts - can also be affected by bans, set on a specific naming.

  • PsyBNC -
    • A Bouncersoftware, which is currently not maintained anymore. As other software is available (e.g. sBNC or ZNC), it's not really advised to use PsyBNCs anymore as they have some uncovered security problems.

    • A common IRC client for Linux users (although Windows versions are available) (see Clients).

Z

  • ZNC -
    • One of the most popular Bouncer softwares 'on the market'. The ZNC provides a more sophisticated approach to the bouncer concept; including channel logging (while being offline), modules for automated processes and more useful options. A description and help content may be found here.
